Vanguard Self Storage refurbishment

Over the years, the Vanguard Self Storage building at Staples Corner was renowned for its rooftop displays from various aircraft to Dr Who’s Tardis, tanks, Santa and his sleigh and more. There is no longer a rooftop display; a 1953 Hawker Hunter F.1 WT555 is now the new refurbished facility's centrepiece, suspended behind a glass façade overlooking the North Circular Road, after being restored to its original glory by North Weald Heritage Aviation (NWHA).

The recently completed refurbishment project included the re-development of the existing site and building to create a larger self-storage and document storage facility. The building has a ground-level tunnel through its centre to access the parking, main reception and loading bay areas at the rear.

The RHB team collaborated on this project with HGP Architects, GD Partnership, MAC, Paul Basham Associates, Bernard Sims Associates, and  Vanguard Holdings.

The project achieved more than a 35% reduction in CO2 emissions over the Part L 2013 baseline and an excellent BREEAM rating.

RHB's MEP designs included:

  • Display lighting for the suspended Hawker Hunter fighter jet at the front of the building
  • Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) for heating and cooling, and hot and cold-water services
  • Ventilation
  • Fire alarms
  • Lighting (tunnel, external, internal)
  • Power
  • Data
  • CCTV
  • Access control
  • PV array
  • EV charging
  • Dry risers
  • Electrical distribution
