Career Summary John joined RHB in March 2006 following a successful career with a top ranked Consulting Engineering Partnership.  He brings his structured training and large project expertise to the Practice.

He has extensive experience in working on complex projects for the higher education and research facility sectors, with numerous successfully completed projects, taken from conception to completion.

He believes in taking a holistic approach, and insists on reviewing all elements and stages of a design for each project, to ensure the proposals are straightforward, practical and cost effective. 

John has worked in the Construction Industry his whole career, with the last 11 years spent in a consultancy environment.

Laboratories and clean room facilities, speculative and bespoke office developments, commercial refurbishments and retail schemes.  John has been responsible for delivering many major projects including:-

Oxford University Estates Department - New Build Cancer Research Building £54 million (M&E Project Value £18 million) New build research laboratory in Oxford with Make Architects, being designed to exceed the requirements of the forthcoming Part L changes.

Dunedin Estates, Chatham Shopping Centre - £2.2 million refurbishment of retail units within this existing 1960’s development

Land Securities PLC, One New Change - A 55,000m2 new build development located in central London, comprising the design and construction of a new office and retail complex located at the corner of Cheapside and New Change.  Value circa £200million. 

Fortnum & Mason, Grand Stair & Atria - Refurbishment of part of this flagship retail store to include a new central atria and grand staircase.  Value circa £1.5m. 

Guys & St Thomas’ NHS Trust, Haematology CPA Review - Feasibility study for the resolution of Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA) related deficiencies within the GSTT campus.  Review includes the amalgamation of satellite laboratories across the campus network into a single building to meet the ongoing vision of the Trusts’ Pathology services.  Projected project budget circa £14M.

St Mary’s NHS Trust, OPD and GUM Clinic - Feasibility study for the conversion of an existing ten storey speculative office block into an Out Patients Department (OPD) and Genito Urinary Clinic (GUM) as part of St Mary’s campus wide regeneration programme.

Marks & Spencer, New Corporate HQ Paddington Basin - A 25,000 m² new headquarters in Paddington Basin, London, incorporating a 1500m² retail unit at Piazza level.  The building was taken in Shell and Core form for fitting out to Cat A and B standard using low energy.  M&E Project value circa £6M.

Orange PLC, New HQ Paddington Basin - 30,000m2 Category A & B fit out for a Corporate Headquarters for Orange PLC, including input on lease negotiations and ongoing review and monitoring of base build scheme. M&E Project Value circa £3.6M

University College London, Centre for Auditory Research - A new build research laboratory, funded by the Wellcome Trust Joint Infrastructure Fund (JIF). The site is located in the Kings Cross area, at the top of the Greys Inn Road.   The project is valued at £10.1 million of which the M&E services total £4.2 million. 

Kings College London & Guys & St Thomas NHS Trust, Guys Hospital Tower Refurbishment - A complex refurbishment of five floors of the Guys Hospital Tower Block in Central London into ACDP (Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens) containment level 2 research laboratories.  M&E Project Value £6M.

Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine, Multidisciplinary Research Building - A new build laboratory building, with exposed services, of approximately 5000m2 valued at £17million total project cost, of which the services construction costs total approximately £5.2million.

Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine,  Biochemistry One Project Full upgrade of the laboratory HVAC services for the Biochemistry Building accommodating an Electron Microscope Suite, a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance facility, an x-ray Crystallography suite, a Bio-reactor suite, mass spectrometry facility and a modern CL3 suite.  Cooling is achieved using absorption chillers, coupled to open circuit, forced draught cooling towers.  M&E services total £3.1 million.

Institute of Cancer Research Surrey, Male Urological Cancer Research Centre A new build extension to a cancer research laboratory in Sutton.  M&E Project Value £1.2M

Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine Biochemistry Level 2 The facility housed a standard biochemistry wet laboratory with support labs, cold room and an animal manipulation room.  The project followed a standard main contractor route.  M&E Project Value £0.4M.

Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine, Sir Alexander Fleming Building -   The BMS Building at Imperial College is a bio-medical teaching and research facility amalgamating three medical schools (St Mary’s, Charing Cross and Imperial College) and their respective research departments into a new state-of-the-art £60M new building.  M&E Project Value £20M 

Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine Molecular Parisitology Laboratory - The refurbishment of level 6 of the Biochemistry Building, to house a CL3 facility.  The project was treated as a fast track installation, with the majority of the installation works undertaken during the College Summer recess.  M&E Project Value £0.35M

Smith Kline Beecham, Crawley - Feasibility Study for Drug Packaging Facility to turn a warehouse unit into a class 10,00 clean room suite.

Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine, Steam Infrastructure Upgrade - The survey, specification and site management of a major steam infrastructure connecting all buildings across the campus.  We analysed current steam loadings, usage, targeted energy savings and advised on the overall CHP installation in relation to tariff analysis and electrical export back to the national grid.

The Wellcome Trust, The Joint Infrastructure Fund (JIF) and Science Research Infrastructure Fund (SRIF) - Part of the assessment panel members for evaluating the feasibility for JIF & SRIF funded projects on both M&E and Structures. 

Rhone Poulenc Rorer Building 115 Upgrade - A feasibility study for a new research laboratory and plant enclosure, including a strip-out and demolition package.  M&E Project Value £1.4M

Land Securities PLC, Davis House Croydon - A desktop study relating to an existing 1960’s office block to evaluate the different methods available to provide the desired comfort conditions.

SmithKline Beecham, Tonbridge - New chemistry research laboratory on two floors, including 44 fume cupboards, laboratory gasses, air-handling plant and associated steam services.  M&E Project Value £750,000.

Glaxo Wellcome, Beckenham -Upgrade of an existing suite of class 1000 clean rooms with the provision of a new powder charging down flow booth and associated air handling equipment.   M&E Project Value £300,000
